Bottle Sterilisers: Boiling, Steaming, and UV—Which Is Best?

Hey! Just wanted to share what I’ve learned about sterilising baby bottles – it’s honestly a whole thing!

There are a few ways to do it – We’ve tried each method and they definitely each have their pros and cons. I'll throw in the links (some affiliated) of the ones we've used and other recommended ones we discovered along the way!

Boiling is super straightforward – I used to just throw everything into a big pot of water and let it boil for like 3-5 mins. It definitely gets the job done, but it’s a bit of a process and you have to be careful not to scald yourself or leave them in too long, they become warped and the plastic turns cloudy.

Microwave sterilising is way faster. We tried those microwave steriliser bags, and it only takes a couple of minutes. Super handy for quick clean-ups, especially when we're exhausted. But I did notice we had to be really careful how everything was arranged or the bottles wouldn’t get properly sterilised, patchy steam spots in certain areas.

Steaming with an electric steriliser has honestly been my favorite. It’s quick, no boiling water to deal with, and you just pop everything in, press a button, and you’re done. Only downside is I had to clean the steriliser itself a lot – it gets mineral build-up from the water over time. The Tommee Tippee one had plenty of real estate to accomodate up to 6 bottles or a mix and match of breast pump parts, teethers and dummies.

UV sterilising is the newest thing I tried, and I was kind of skeptical at first, but it’s actually amazing. No water, no heat – I just pop the bottles in, hit start, and in about 10 minutes everything’s done and totally dry. It's been so convenient, especially for all the other random little things. The only downside is the price – it’s definitely more of an investment – and it does take up a bit of counter space depending on which model you go with. But honestly, I use it daily now.

In the end, they all do the job – just depends on what fits your routine best. If you’re thinking of switching things up or trying something new, happy to chat more!
